There are changes included in Domains by PMI for PMP exam 2021.
As per PMP 2015, the domains were as follows-
a. Initiation-
The project is actually discussed using various business cases. Requirements are basically explained and feasibility of project is checked during this process.
b. Analysis and planning-
Research and analysis is done on various aspects. Multiple plans are made in order to proceed further. Deadlines are set with respect to resource.
c. Execution-
Actual work of project starts in this phase. Plans are executed and tasks are completed by assigning them to particular resource.
d. Monitoring-
In this phase status of project is measured with respect to budget, resource and timeline. Changes in projects are verified with quality delivery.
e. Closure-
It is final stage where project gets completed. Whether project is successful or even may fail but some learning is taken as a conclusion. Future enhancement is also made on this basis.
So as per new PMP certification exam that has started from January 2021 following are new domains as –
a. People-
These can be also termed as human process. It actually tests the candidate for the skills required for best project manager. These domains emphasize to generate good leads as per demand of higher management or stakeholders. People being domain 1 comprises portion of 42 %. It includes 14 tasks (tasks- action executed by project manager) like Manage conflict, Lead a team, Support team performance, Empower team members and stakeholders, Ensure team members/stakeholders are adequately trained, Build a team, Address and remove impediments, obstacles, and blockers for the team, Negotiate project agreements, Collaborate with stakeholders, Build shared understanding, Engage and support virtual teams, Define team ground rules.
b. Process-
Process involves establishing a communications standard for stakeholders, planning budget and resources, managing project milestones and overall schedule, following change management practices, determining appropriate methodologies, and objectives. People being domain 2 comprises portion of major 50 %. Process involves 17 tasks as Execute project with the urgency required to deliver business value, Manage communications, Assess and manage risks, Engage stakeholders, Plan and manage budget and resources, Plan and manage schedule, Plan and manage quality of products/deliverables, Plan and manage scope, Integrate project planning activities, Manage project changes, Plan and manage procurement, Manage project artifacts, Determine appropriate project methodology/methods and practices, Establish project governance structure, Manage project issues, Ensure knowledge transfer for project continuity, Plan and manage project/phase closure or transitions.
c. Business Environment-
It involves using of business strategies for the project. It is actually delivering successful project within deadline with respect to limited resources and set budget. It comprise of 8% of portion. It has four tasks as Plan and manages project compliance, Evaluate and delivers project benefits and value, Evaluate and address external business environment changes for impact on scope and Support organizational change.
PMBOK-
The latest edition for PMBOK is PMBOK7 which follows principle oriented approach than process oriented approach unlike that of PMBOK6. PMBOK6 was based on 10 knowledge areas like Integration, Scope, Schedule, Cost, Quality, Resource, Communications, Risk, Procurement and Stakeholder. On the other hand PMBOK7 is based on 8 performance domains as Team, Stakeholders, Life cycle, Planning, Navigating uncertainty, Delivery, Performance and Project work.
Two fundamental aspects of changes in PMBOK7 are -
a. Value Delivery System- A system that collaborates to provide value to the customer is value delivery system. It is choosing best business strategies to achieve objectives by taking initiatives for product deliveries increasing capabilities of organization leading best outcomes benefiting customers by turning it into business values of organization.
b. Project Delivery Principles-
There are total 12 principles as follows-
1. Success – Project is expected to be successful.
2. Project Manager- Best project manager is required to lead the project.
3. Commitment- Everyone involved in project is expected to give their best.
4. Structure- Project should be completed in deadline with respect to resource and budget.
5. Definition-Phases of project should be well defined.
6. Transparency-Scope of project should be clearly defined.
7. Communication-Proper communication is required to avoid confusion.
8. Progress-Progress is expected as each step.
9. Life Cycle- Project should be completed as per phases.
10. Culture- Culture of project should suite team.
11. Risk- Risk management should be planned and executed.
12. Accountability- Metrics should be calculated for project.
As a result, it is concluded that PMP exam has undergone a change this year with respect to reorganization or modification of topics and it will surely need proper guidance along with best coaching.
