Keeping in view, the rising number of crimes against girls in the country, it is important to provide self-defence training to them in the schools to ensure their safety and security. Self-defence training is a life skill that helps girls to be more aware of their surroundings and be prepared for the unexpected at any time. Through the self defence training, the girls are taught to become psychologically, intellectually and physically strong enough to protect themselves in times of distress. Self defence training techniques instills self confidence amongst girls and helps to promote girls education particularly their transition to secondary and higher secondary level and to reduce the dropout rate in schools.
Crimes against women have been more than doubled over the past ten years, according to latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. As many as 2.24 million crimes against women were reported over the past decade: 26 crimes against women are reported every hour, or one complaint every two minutes, reveals an India-Spend analysis based on the last decade’s data. The semantic meaning of “crime against women” is direct or indirect physical or mental cruelty to women. Crimes directed specifically against women and in which only women are victims are characterized as “crimes against women”. Kidnapping and abduction of women (315,074) is the third-most-reported crime followed by rape (243,051), insult to modesty of women (104,151) and dowry death (80,833). In the recent year cyber-crimes against women have also increased.
With growing crimes against women and girl child, it becomes imperative to teach selfdefense to every girl and trainings shall be repeated every year with a warmup capsule session. This shall be made a mandatory part of curriculum in all the schools, colleges, skill institutes etc. later on.
